50 YEARS AGO......ATLANTA HAD MANY BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED 'FIRE HYDRANTS'....AFTERWARDS, PAINTED 'METALLIC SILVER'....IN ACCORDANCE TO THE NEWLY REVISED 'CITY ORDANCES'

In 1976, many artists got 'paid'...well, $35 or so, to paint old fire hydrants to celebrate the birth of our Nation.......this one was my favorite.....a 'fire' hydrant....and 'the burning of Atlanta'.....a 'double bill' that the city got on the cheapside....Just about all of the hydrants were later 'painted over'....remember that ugly, shiny silver paint? I've been 'looking around' to find one that still has its old '76 paint job on it......

HAPPENSTANTIAL ART COLLECTING....

Happenstance? 25 years ago, I went 'x-mas shopping', wearing a ruffled white blouse and a red coat.....At my first 'stop'....there, leaning against an old flour-sifting cabinet, in Atlanta's trashiest Antiques Store....the kind of store that sells old car mufflers, drill-presses and machine parts, was this 1904 Jules Cheret poster of Arlette Dorgere....The 'dealer' was glad to see it 'go'.....to make room for a 'Shell Motor Oil' poster! "No accounting for tastes." the dealer commented, as he eagerly moved the Shell Oil poster into place against the sifting cabinet!.....I was thinking exactly the same thing!
