When my friend and compatriot antique dealer, Dane Hawkins, died....20 years ago.....his redneck sister came to Atlanta to "get rid of all that junk" that Dane had collected during his years as a dealer in fine antiques.....one of the treasures was a Carlo Bugatti desk and chair...which his sister thought was "really atrocious"....I had not made a bid on the furniture, having suggested that she sell it through Sotheby's.......not heeding my suggestion, thinking I must have been kidding....she dumped it at his estate sale, for $3500, assuming that the buyer was an extravagant fool to have even thought it appealing......guess I should have made an offer!
