These 'water bears' survive by entering a cryptobiotic state ("tun"), where they dehydrate, pause metabolism, and repair DNA, as they have for 500 million years, allowing them to even withstand 10 days of space vacuum exposure and, in some cases, reproduce upon returning to Earth.
